Asphalt Jungle review

Asphalt Jungle is a retro style puzzle game in which you must make a road for a car that wont stop. I promise not to make any Toyota jokes, read on to see if this game should get a recall or not, oops 😉

The game idea is simple, you play on a grid of 10×10 squares which are full of sections of road which come in a few types of shape; straights, turns, crossroads and dead ends. You must rotate the squares to make a path for the car to drive over, once it has done so the tile is removed from the game. After a period of time any removed tiles are respawned which can then be used again.

You must plan ahead to ensure that you do not run out of road either by the car driving into a empty square or colliding with a piece of the road which is not connected. The car continues driving not matter what so advance road building by rotating the squares is essential.

The game is split into levels and requires a certain amount of score to be reached before you can begin the next level. You gain score when the car drives over a square and are also added or deducted when driving over score squares. Once you reach the score you can continue playing and kind of bank your score for the next level to improve the highscore, the following level has a higher score goal to reach.

Four difficulty levels are available to choose from ranging from easy to impossible. The harder the difficulty the more score multiplier you gain but at the expense of a faster car. The difficulties feel about right, the impossible level is certainly a challenge. A highscore table is included to keep track of the best scores so there is a lot of replayability if you are into the high score challenge with your friends.

Presentation is rather basic with plain menus and screens, they do not look great but they are easy to navigate. The graphics have received a revamp since the original release, you can choose between the two versions graphics from the menu. While the graphics are still not amazing they do give a retro feel to the game. Music is non existent but there is an option to play music from your 360 or you could use the PC stream from the 360 guide. The sound effects are very minimal, I would have liked to have heard a notification that you have reached the score goal for that level.

Asphalt Jungle will not be everyone’s cup of tea. Like the developers other game Astro Taxi, looks can be deceiving. Visually the game is very basic but if you can get past the graphics there is a fairly good puzzle game which gets quite challenging in later levels. This is not a game you can sit down and play for hours on end but it is fine for bursts of say 30 minutes or so. Give the trial version a try at least.

Asphalt Jungle costs 80 :MSPoints: and more information as well as the trial and full versions of the game can be found on the Marketplace.
