Toy Soldiers: The Kaiser’s Battle Review

The Toy Soldiers are fighting again, and the French have joined the battle with Signal Studios’ latest DLC instalment, The Kaiser’s Battle. Is the new content worth the price? Read on to find out.[nggtags gallery=tskaiser1]

In this new instalment, you play as the French Army, so naturally it’s going to a tough battle. There are three new single player maps, two multiplayer maps, a new boss, and three new achievements. I’ll be focusing on the single player, as the multiplayer doesn’t like me much, and there are constant disconnections (since the original release).

Blucher-Yorck is a large scale map featuring 13 tower placements, and your toy box is situated near the back of the map. While most enemies will travel from the opposite side, players should be aware of the two bridges located right behind the toy box. The map is very well set up, so players shouldn’t expect to have too many troubles here. A bomber would have been great, but since it’s not included on this map, you’ll want to some Flying Pigs to take out the tank hordes.

The next map, Operation Gneisenau, is a much smaller map, featuring a challenging night-time battle. You’ve got the use of the biplane here, which comes in handy to battle a couple of small Zeppelins that attempt to occupy your airspace.  Due to the dark nature of this map, you’re going to want to destroy the enemy infantry waves quickly, as it gets quite tough to see them once they near your toy box entrance. You’ve got ten tower placements to work with, and you’ll need to be strategic if you want a perfect score.

The final map, The Last Offensive, is another large-scale map which features 11 possible tower placements, a sniper tower, and a very helpful bomber plane. You’ll need to destroy a couple enemy Howitzers to max out your towers on this map as well. Your toy box is situated at the very back of the map, but it’s very vulnerable as well. Enemy infantry commonly sneaks out from the Eastern side of the map, placing them very close to your toy box so be sure to keep at side covered. The final wave will introduce the new experimental weapon, the mammoth German K-Wagen. It enters the map directly across from your toy box and drives straight across, no detours. The K-Wagen is a powerful foe, and it’s health bar will refill after being depleted, required a different attack approach. If you’re not set up properly, you will fail – care for a tip to save you some frustration? Make sure you have some very powerful towers off to the sides of your immediate toy box area.

The difficulty level feels like it’s been increased immensely for these new maps. Maybe I’m out of practice, or maybe it’s due to the was that the French were never that great in battle. The maps are balanced slightly in favor of the enemies, but with careful placement of your towers, and switches to other types when needed, you should be victorious at the end of the battle. There’s the two mutiplayer maps as well, but due to frequent disconnects, we’re not going into details with them. Along with the DLC, you get 3 new achievements allowing you another 50 Gamerscore points – and it’ll take a bit of work to get them.

Overall, for 400 :MSPoints: it’s a solid value, more so for people that have the patience to find a good multiplayer connection. The difficulty will keep you on your toes, trying to get perfect scores and you’ll likely spend two hours or more getting perfect scores on the three maps, unless you’re an expert strategist in Toy Soldiers. The DLC pack is available on the Marketplace, so if you’re a big fan of Toy Soldiers, we recommend you pick it up.
