Figment Review

Have there ever been dreams that seem so real that it became hard to distinguish between reality and illusion? And upon waking up, did it feel like everything happening was to real to be a dream? Tempula Studios has brought that exact feeling to XBLIG with their very first game, Figment.

The story start out in a comic bo… er graphic novel style in that is displayed by panels. We see a young boy sitting with two of his friends who look to be some type of toys. In particular, a fighter type toy and a spider type toy. However, while the boy is dreaming some evil monsters kidnap the boy while still in his dream. Upon seeing this happen, the two decide to fight to retrieve the boy and restore his peaceful dream from the nightmare they have become.

The levels are set up in a 2D room fashion, meaning that there is typically a door leading into the room and a door leading out. Players must navigate the level and fight enemies to reach the next door. While simple in concept, it’s not simple in execution. With enemies that launch projectiles and that move quickly, it’s a chore and a half to dodge and destroy all the baddies.

The battle mechanics are actually quite simple and well refined. There is a base attack and special. Each of these attacks also changes while jumping. This can assist in some levels as projectiles can be launched. This is particularly useful in later levels.

In regards to the two heroes, there are disadvantages and advantages to each. While the fighting type has stronger attacks and moves slower, he can take more damage is seems, while the spider heroine is able to move quicker and attacks with quicker weaker attacks. In addition, she also possesses the ability to double jump. However, I have always been a strength type player so I stuck wit the fighter.

Graphically, the game is very smooth and is extremely enjoyable. I noticed that while playing I did not have any slowdown or dropped frame rate which is always a plus. The music has a whimsical feel to it, much like a dream would and was very fitting for the game.

Overall, Figment is a fantastic game that I would recommend to anyone. With simple yet challenging levels and great music and visuals, what’s not to love? And for a price tag of 80 :MSPoints:, it is set at a great price point for what you would get out of the game. If you fancy playing the demo yourself, you can always check it out here.
