The second DLC pack for the incredibly addictive Trials HD is now available and we take it for a quick ride. Is it a big thrills or big spills adventure?
I am a massive fan of Trials HD, it has earned itself a permanent place on my Xbox HDD thanks to its easy to pick up and play nature, ideal for a quick 10 minute game while waiting for something. I am far from being the best, I still have not completed all of the Extreme levels, but like many others I enjoy setting times and scores for friends to beat and get beaten 🙂 You can read our review of Trials HD here if you are not familiar with the game. The first DLC pack was great and had a good mixture of tracks and new skill games so buying the second was a no-brainer.

Big Thrills comes with a total of 40 brand new tracks; 1 on Beginner, 8 on Easy, 13 on Medium, 15 on Hard and 3 on Extreme. There are no new Skill games which I found very disappointing as I have spent just as much time on those as the tracks and they could be considered separate game in their own right. You also get the chance to earn 50 new gamerscore points via three achievements.
The new tracks consist of 30 tracks designed by the development team RedLynx and 10 tracks from the recent Big Thrills Track Designer contest. The mixture between fun and technical track designs changes as you move between difficulties, overall the game leans to the more technical side with the majority of tracks being found on the harder difficulties. The new tracks see you riding over a Great Wall of China inspired level, to a bouncing castle, infiltrating a secret base, racing over railways and battling an end of level style boss spider. The tracks do not feel repetitive and are all well designed using some very ingenious ideas.
One of my particular favourite tracks sees you take on a small puzzle challenge in which you must activate the correct power supplies to open the next part of the track, if you pick the wrong one a bomb will drop on you. While the pattern remains the same each attempt, it adds some variety to the game and shows good use of the built in level designer. The contest winners tracks are just as good as RedLynx’s and you would be hard pressed to notice the difference unless you read the description for each track.
If you rush through the levels you can complete them all in a few hours depending on your skill level, but as any Trials HD player will tell you, it is all about completing them in the minimum number of retries and best time. You can expect a much longer length of game in order to perfect your times and retries which is what the objective is.
If like me, you are a fan of the Skills games, you may feel a little cheated with only tracks being featured in this DLC. But overall the Big Thrills pack is a recommended purchase for any Trials HD fan and it will give you many hours of challenging fun. How about a Trials HD Big Skills pack RedLynx?
