Goblyn Stomp is an arena survival game of sorts set way back in the days when people spoke with posh accents and sepia was the default graphics filter… Does Goblyn Stomp put on a jolly good show? Read on old chap.

You play the part of Chap Scallywag, a shop keeper whose shop has been infested with tiny Goblyns. Chap must keep the Goblyns at bay initially by jumping on them one by one, after a number of kills he learns a new move which allows him to stomp on them while in mid air to take out any in the drop zone. Once a number more have been killed Chap has access to mines, known as mynes in this game, of which up to ten can be placed at once and then detonated taking out any Goblyns in proximity including Chap if you are not careful. Finally the last boost after many more Goblyn deaths is a Cane attack which takes out any Goblyns in the surrounding area. The variety of power ups are good and are fun to use keeping mostly in the theme of the game.
Goblyn upon Goblyn will continue to invade as this game never ends, this game is all about getting the highest score possible, in this case one Goblyn equals one point. Goblyns will fight back and a bite from one will reduce your health which once empty is game over. Fortunately the villagers occasionally throw in a bottle of health which will restore your energy back to full. I did find the Gobyln’s to be very fast to bite, if you spend a split second on the ground near one you will be bitten. It is best to stay in the air as much as possible or be handy with the cane.

The game play can get repetitive after spending a bit of time playing it which is mainly due to the repeated button pressing with nothing to really break it up. For me it started getting to the point where you wanted to die just to have a break instead of pausing the game. I think a level based game or an interval of some kind, which would have kept in great with the theme, would have helped break what becomes an almost monotonous task.
The design theme of the game is an olden days scenario complete with sepia tones and Chap in a suit and top hat. The graphics are cleanly drawn and do the job. The music is nicely done with a old fashioned piano which fits in perfectly. Sound effects are used for all the actions but the Goblyn being stomped noise can grate after a while, the slide whistle sound always makes me chuckle (reminds me of Carry On films) so that makes up for it. When you do die you get a funny death roll tune and are presented with Chap on top of a mound of all the stomped Goblyns which gives a sense of achievement. You also get to enter your name on the highscore table if you done well enough.

Goblyn Stomp costs 80 :MSPoints: which is a fair price for the game. The game is fun in short bursts now and again, so if you are looking for something as a gap filler this is perfect, if you want something to sink your teeth into I would look elsewhere.
