Are you fast enough? review

Are you fast enough? is an arcade game where the aim is to stack rows of blocks to reach the target and rack up the high scores. So are you fast enough? Read on to find out.

The game starts with a horizontally scrolling row of seven blocks which can be stopped to create a base for your tower. Once placed, a new row of blocks will appear and you must stop them so they fit exactly on top of the first row. You keep repeating this building a tower like structure until you reach the yellow line which indicates the level has been completed. If you incorrectly place a row of blocks you will lose any blocks that overlap. By holding the trigger button you can speed up the movement of the blocks to save time. If you run out of blocks before reaching the yellow line or the time expires, it is game over.

There are four difficulty modes available to play; Easy, Normal, Hard and Impossible. Each difficulty increases the speed of the moving blocks, they provide a decent challenge as well as increasing your score multiplier up to 200%. Normal difficulty and above introduces a countdown timer which again provides a good challenge. The impossible mode is very tricky and requires some fast skills to reach the yellow line in time!

Setting a high score is the challenge. Combined with the score multiplier for harder difficulties, you can also earn some vital bonus points if you get past the yellow line before the timer runs out. A red line is several rows above and if you can reach that, it earns you a nice bonus. Each level slightly increases the speed, so while playing the normal difficulty will usually keep you alive longer, you earn less score in the long run compared to Hard or Insane. A local Leaderboard is present to record the highest scores for bragging rights.

There are a collection of badges to earn while playing the game. Four In A Row, for example, is unlocked if you can place four rows without overlapping. Level Master is awarded if you can reach level 10 and Waste Of Time is unlocked if you play the game for two hours in total. The badges provide a good challenge to unlock them all.

Presentation and graphics are fairly basic with a bland background image set against brightly coloured blocks. The graphics do the job but are nothing amazing. Music is non present, there is an option to play music stored on your Xbox though. Sound effects are again basic, reusing some of them from previous games of the developers catalogue.

Are you fast enough? has promise but it lacks that certain something to keep you playing for longer than thirty minutes or so. Setting high scores is fun and the Impossible mode is challenging, but sooner rather than later you will find the game too repetitive. The full game costs 80 :MSPoints: which is a struggle to recommend as there are other similar games that have better presentation and more fun gameplay.
